About the Sirocco Club

The Sirocco Club is dedicated to providing encouragement to Australian women (and men) to take up Raks Sharki (bellydance) to examine its roots and their present day variations and above all to enjoy the fantasy of an exotic dance form which welcomes women of all ages and shapes.

For those unfamiliar with the Sirocco Club phenomenon the photos soon to be posted on the site will give you some idea of why the Sirocco Club nights in Perth were so popular.

The Sirocco Club was set up in around 1998 to provide a venue for students from any school, who had reached a good performance level but were finding it difficult to get a solo gig through the usual channels. Sirocco events were held in a central location which could be appropriately decorated as a stage or cabaret performance venue. The Palms in Subiaco was one of those locations.

How do Sirocco Club nights differ from student Haflas?

Like student haflas, Sirocco nights are for fun and entertainment, but additionally, for developing dancers, they provide an important opportunity to test your entertainer’s skills with a broader audience than your fellow students. This being said the atmosphere is very supportive and invariably the new dancers find it a confidence boosting and very positive experience.

Who’s on the program?

A few experienced dancers, usually teachers, and as well, Sirocco nights have a few group performances on the program, usually from an established school or group. However, the really exciting part of the night is to see new dancers perform.

Although as a solo dancer you are encouraged to present your own choreography you are welcome to use something taught by someone else. However, if this is the case you must ask permission to perform it even if you have made a few changes.
