I have been the owner of The Arabian Nights
Dancers, a belly dance school with associated performing group, for twenty
years.
The years prior to that were spent developing my knowledge of
belly dance and other dance forms, after initial training with Belyssa twenty
five years ago. Supported by my partner (now my husband) I was a regular dancer
at the original A Thousand and One Nights restaurant in Perth in the early
eighties. We were both also regular dancers at the many parties and
celebrations held by the Arabic community of those times.
I started my
own school in 1985 and later my own performing group - The Arabian Nights
Dancers, the first large group to give performances in the traditional Arabian
and North African tribal style.
The Sirocco Club developed from a need to
provide students with performance opportunities and to develop social networks.
During this time I also pursued a demanding career as a health professional,
later moving into areas of health teaching and management from which I have now
retired to concentrate on other things.
My main focus at the present time
is to encourage all women to engage in dance at some level and in particular, to
train young dancers in safe and creative dancing, with a good understanding of
the background to present day dancing styles.
